Sensitisation (development of a reaction) in highly sensitive children occurs during the first contact of foreign proteins with the immune system. Clinical manifestations are classified into immediate, intermediate or delayed according to the time elapsed since intake of cow’s milk proteins and appearance of clinical symptoms. These symptoms may appear in many organ systems, with specific symptoms:

Gastrointestinal tract: vomiting, reflux, diarrhoea, constipation, etc.

Skin: dermatitis, eczema, hives.

Respiratory tract: laboured breathing, asthma.

Behavioural symptoms: crying, shaking, apathy.

Cow’s milk protein intolerance (CMPI)
Adverse reactions to cow’s milk proteins in which a pathogenic mechanism cannot be established. This term is used in clinical practice to describe clinical reactions normally with digestive symptomatology, caused after intake of cow’s milk, and in which an IgE-mediated mechanism cannot be proven.

There are also other types of intolerances. Lactose intolerance is defined as maldigestion of lactose as a consequence of intestinal lactase deficiency.

When someone has intestinal lactase deficiency, lactose that is not digested goes to the intestine where it is fermented by the flora, producing water, short-chain fatty acids (acetate, butyrate, lactate) and gas (CO2, methane and hydrogen). This causes intolerance symptoms such as flatulence, abdominal pain, etc.

There are many procedures to diagnose lactose intolerance, such as the presence of reducing substances in stool, quantifying their pH level, the oral lactose tolerance test, and the hydrogen breath test. The diagnosis is confirmed by checking whether symptoms improve after removing milk from the diet. Treatment consists of removing lactose from the diet.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”
How do I know if my baby has any food allergies or intolerances? “]

Food allergy is an illness that is steadily growing in children. Sensitisation to food allergens tends to occur during the first few months of life. It is defined as an immunological reaction to harmless substances that are present in foods. The immune system produces specific antibodies against specific protein structures in the diet. These types of reactions are called allergic reactions.
Basic treatment for food allergies and intolerances is excluding from the patient’s diet the food or foods that are deemed to cause the symptomatology.

In order to prevent food allergies, mothers are encouraged to breastfeed, limit intake of some foods while breastfeeding high-risk children, use highly hydrolysed formulas if breastfeeding is not an option, delay complementary feeding, and ensure that the complementary foods introduced into the diet are non-allergenic. These are the most accepted recommendations to prevent food allergies in high-risk children and decrease, or at least delay, the appearance of allergic symptoms.
One of the foods that produces the most adverse reactions in early childhood is cow’s milk or formulas that contain intact cow’s milk proteins.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”What is gluten intolerance? “]

Gluten is a protein found in most grains: wheat, barley, rye, oats, etc. Grains that do not contain gluten are rice and corn.

In genetically predisposed individuals, gluten is the cause of coeliac disease (CD). CD is a permanent intolerance to gluten. CD causes an atrophy of the intestinal villi which leads to maldigestion of nutrients: proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins. The most common symptoms are: loss of appetite, loss of weight, chronic diarrhoea, abdominal bloating, mood swings, growth retardation in children. Treatment consists of removing gluten from the diet.

If you suspect that your child may have a food intolerance, speak to your doctor.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Why should excessive consumption of sugar be avoided from a young age? “]

Avoiding sugary foods helps prevent tooth decay, among other dental diseases, as well as obesity. Therefore, the sooner a baby becomes used to flavours that are not excessively sweet, the less likely it is that they will want these flavours in the future, thus creating good food habits.

[/et_pb_accordion_item] [/et_pb_accordion][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.69″ background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” border_style=”solid” custom_margin=”3em||0px|” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” background_size=”initial” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|desktop” module_alignment=”left”]

2. This is when you should stop mashing foods so that your baby gets used to chewing, though some dishes can remain mashed.
[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”When can I start feeding my baby cow’s milk? Until then, you may feed your baby follow-on formula, or Stage 3/Growing-up formula.

The reason for this is that until that moment your baby’s digestive and renal system is still developing and the amount of mineral salts and proteins in cow’s milk may be excessive. This excess of proteins may lead to a high concentration of solutes in the kidney (making the baby’s system work harder, which is counter-productive in a system that is not yet developed). This is why our Nutribén® Proalpha line contains alpha-lactalbumin, a protein with high biological value. In order to carry out the thermal hydrolysis process and break down the starches, we must first make a wet mixture using a limited amount of starches. Using too much would cause it to thicken and block the cooking equipment.
This is why we have to add fewer grain flours and complete the necessary carbohydrate level by adding sugar and maltodextrin.
Other brands hydrolyse the flours enzymatically before treating and drying them. This allows them to achieve a high level of hydrolysis, obtaining monosaccharides, disaccharides, and oligosaccharides. Meaning they obtain sugar levels that are similar to the ones we obtain by adding maltodextrin and sugar. The result obtained is the same, what differs is the process.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Could it be argued that by adding less grains, there is also a smaller amount of proteins compared to other brands? “]

No, grains have very little protein. They are not a significant source of proteins, unlike foods of animal origin (meat, milk, eggs, etc.). Although our cereals have less protein, the difference when compared to other brands is insignificant and cannot be argued to be an advantage.
The amount of proteins in baby cereal is legally regulated, it should be below 5.5 g/100 kcal.
Furthermore, once the cereal is reconstituted, the main source of protein is milk, as grains barely provide protein in the final reconstitution. For example, if you add 12% of the cereal in our box of 8 Grains and honey, the amount of protein provided by grains would be 0.78 g/100g.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Which Nutribén® Cereal boxes state that they may contain ‘traces of milk’? “]

All of them except Gluten-free non-dairy cereals.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Why do only Gluten-free cereals not contain traces of milk? “]

Because they undergo an exhaustive cleaning process to remove both traces of milk and gluten. CMPA usually begins when babies start eating gluten-free cereals. From then on, its occurrence in children decreases.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Why do Nutribén® cereal boxes state that they may contain traces of lactose? “]

Because the law obligates to declare this when they are produced on the same production line as products with lactose. After making the cereals with adapted milk, the milk content is very low or non-existent because it is carefully removed. The risk of any issue is very low. However, we still cannot give a 100% guarantee.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Are the fruits in Nutribén® Fruit Cereals natural? “]

Yes, they are natural.
